| Flood Relief Update Members of Lackawanna Presbytery congregations have been generous in giving their time and donations to the churches and communities affected by the flooding that resulted from Tropical Storm Lee in September. Your generosity has enabled the presbytery to partner with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and local agencies and denominations to provide physical and financial support along with care and concern for those in need. Local and visiting volunteers have combed river banks, scoured churches, and helped homeowners begin the rebuilding process. |
| Since September ... • Donations of food, supplies and money have poured into the presbytery office, and are still being gratefully accepted. • Volunteer centers for use by visiting and local workers have been set up by host committees in Wyoming and Towanda. • Many thanks to food coordinator Jean Biggar (Dunmore) and the folks of Forty Fort, 1st Pittston, Towanda and Wyoming parishes for their help and hospitality. • Site-committee members have contacted over 100 flood victims whose names were received from our congregations and local agencies and have been matching them with assistance. • Many appreciated hours of calls, visits, and side-by-side work with volunteers have been donated by committee chair Jan Thyren (W. Pittston) along with Melba Fialko (Clarks Summit), Stew Harry (COCU) and Warren Kellar (Covenant). • Two of our flooded churches have applied for and received grants from PDA to help repair damages. • The West Pittston church, over 80 percent damaged, has been winterized as its members worship in a nearby Catholic sanctuary and enter a winter of discernment. • Brand new hymnals, replaced then stored after a printing mistake, have been donated...by Pastor Jim Thyren's hometown church in New Jersey. • Student groups from Waynesburg, PA and Camden, NJ joined youth from First Presbyterian in Wilkes-Barre on a riverfront work day in Shickshinny. • A member of the riverfront clean-up crew found, buried in a grocery bag in the mud, a carton of unbroken eggs. • Visiting volunteers from Allentown, Easton, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have joined local crews to work on homes and other facilities in Falls, Sugar Run, West Pittston, Tunkhannock, Wilkes-Barre, Wyalusing and several other communities. • A presbytery work crew cleared trees and debris lodged along riverfront trails and fields at Camp Lackawanna in Tunkhannock. • Camp caretaker Paul Hardy salvaged 17 of 18 picnic tables washed downstream from the pavilion. • Volunteer groups from throughout the state have already registered at our centers to help continue flood relief in the spring and summer months of 2012. Ongoing... Five Presbyterian churches and thousands of homes in Lackawanna Presbytery's church communities have suffered serious flood damage as a result of Tropical Storm Lee. Our volunteer centers in Wyoming and Towanda can be used by visiting and local teams for meetings, meals, overnight stays and general coordination of work efforts.
